Message from the President
NanoTerasu, the 3GeV high-brightness synchrotron radiation facility which began full operation in April 2024, has completed its first year. Thanks to the support of many users from Japan and abroad, we have taken a powerful step toward the creation of new knowledge and innovation.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your warm support and deep understanding.
NanoTerasu was realized through numerous challenges, driven by a passionate desire for recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake and to light the beacon of scientific and technological innovation in the Tohoku region. Contributing to society as a whole is a fundamental responsibility of a large-scale research infrastructure. Rather than merely advocating its usefulness, we are determined to open the future with this world's best "eye" through concrete actions based on a realistic approach to solving social issues.
With this conviction, the Photon Science Innovation Center (PhoSIC) has established and declared a new vision: "Illuminating the Future, Opening the World with Our Light." To realize this vision, all our executives and employees will forge ahead, deeply engraving in our hearts our mission to "realize a sustainable society by illuminating the nano-world."
Over the past year, we have focused on building a cutting-edge utilization support system so that all users can demonstrate their best performance. In particular, many companies and academic institutions have participated in the "Coalition Concept," which serves as a driving force for problem-solving, and concrete results are steadily beginning to emerge. I strongly feel that this is the steady heartbeat of an innovation ecosystem formed through the co-creation of diverse players.
At PhoSIC, personnel with diverse talents and backgrounds respect each other and combine their expertise. By fostering an organizational culture that embraces challenges, we will continue to pursue world-class user support.
As the international situation becomes increasingly complex and we enter an era of uncertainty, a grand vision is required. Tohoku, having overcome the earthquake disaster to host NanoTerasu, bears a mission that goes beyond mere expectations of economic effects: to create new value from the region and strongly lead Japan's research and development. We will pursue the further evolution of NanoTerasu and connect its light to the deepening of academia, dramatic strengthening of industrial competitiveness, nurturing of the next generation of human resources, and solving of global social issues.
By doing so, we intend to build an unwavering "Science-Based Innovation Ecosystem" and contribute to the future of our country and the world.
We sincerely ask for your continued support and encouragement.
Masaki Takata, President
Photon Science Innovation Center (PhoSIC)
